Junaid Jamshed Needs a Commitment ...To A Mental Asylum

First of all, a big shout-out to Tazeen who wrote an excellent post on her blog about that neanderthal proto-Talib Junaid Jamshed and what he said on that charlatan Aamir Liaquat Hussain (aka 'Dr' Evil)'s show Jaahil Online... er, Aalim Online.

You really should read the post and see the video of the show yourself, available thanks to vidpk. But basically, this is what Mullah JJ had to say about the tragic incident in Karachi wherein 19 women queuing up for free food rations lost their lives in stampede:

1. Allah has created the poor (and a few rich people) and that's the way it's meant to be
2. The poor should not complain and should show patience, even if it means starving
3. These women died because they had lost their faith in God and Islam
4. The biggest problem in Pakistan is that the poor have lost their faith
5. It's better to starve to death than lose your self-dignity

Of course, Mullah JJ can say all this because the closest he's ever been to poor people is when they irritate him by knocking on his car window, as he himself admits. And of course, the call by the rich (after all Mullah JJ is rolling in millions from his Vital Signs days, his clothing line and from doing the odd endorsement of Lays chips) for the poor to not become a nuisance, to accept the social and economic status quo as God-ordained, is nothing new. The Vatican had followed the same line for centuries in support of monarchs and emperors, which is why "liberation theology" that sprang out of socially left-wing clergy in Latin America was (and is) considered almost heretical. But it's interesting to see the Tableeghi Jamaat (of which Mullah JJ is an avid proponent) come full circle from the revolutionary interventions of Muslim scholars like Ali Shariati and Mohammad Iqbal and proclaim the same hackneyed principles of economic status quo so publicly. Mullah JJ is of course no Iqbal who had proclaimed:

"Jiss khait se dehqaan ko moyassar ho na rozi
Uss khait ke har khosha-e-gundum ko jala do"

[The land that does not feed its farmer / Burn every sheaf of wheat in that land]

It's highly unlikely that Mullah JJ has even read anything other than the washing instructions on his over-priced clothes. But what is particularly galling about this insensitive, arrogant wanker (man would be too dignifying for him) is that these women were not even protesting dire economic conditions, which Mullah JJ obviously does not like (the protesting, that is, not the dire economic conditions). They were simply trying to survive as best as they can in a time of rising inflation and unemployment.

But I don't really want to repeat what Tazeen has already eloquently written about. What I wanted to point out was something else Mullah JJ said, further on in the clip, which left me even more dumbfounded and is solid proof, if any were needed, that this idiot needs to have a straitjacket slapped on him and led gently into the confines of a padded room. This bit comes in around 22:45 on the clip and I am reproducing it verbatim here:

"Mehngai insaanon ki wajah se nahin aati. Subah ke waqt aik fareshta aata hai aur aa kar ailaan karta hai, aur..aur..chawal ke danay se le kar tael ke saaray nirkh tae kar ke jaata hai. Ab laga lo jo aap ne karna hai aap ne, jitni stock marketing mein karna hai, yeh karna hai, woh karna hai, jitni aqlain lagani hain laga lo. Bula lo finance minister ko bhi aur falaanay minister ko bhi aur uss minister ko bhi. Koi kuchh nahin kar sakta. Jab loag farmabardar ho jaatay hain tau Allah ta'ala ki taraf se moafaqat ke faislay hotay hain oopar se."

[Inflation is not caused by human beings. In the morning an angel arrives and announces the rates for everything from rice to cooking oil. Now, you can do what you will, try what you will, in the stock market or wherever. You an call the finance minister, or this or that minister, nobody can do anything. It is only when people become obedient that Allah takes decisions in their favour.]

Un-effing-believable. Not only that there are people still out there who actually believe in such  dangerous hocus pocus (dangerous because it chooses to ignore the real reasons of deprivation and hunger) but that they are provided a platform on prime time television to spout their baloney. (I suppose the angel also announces the Rs. 2000 pricetag for each Mullah JJ kurta as well!) One can only marvel at Geo which obvioulsy was not content with sharing the mealy-mouthed inanities of Dr Evil with the Pakistani public but felt there was some lunacy void in the programme that needed to be filled.

On  a final note (and as an eloquent response to Mullah JJ's theories of economics) I just want to share these lines from sufi Baba Bulleh Shah that were quoted by Jang columnist Munnoo Bhai in today's column:

Dekh O Bandeya

Asmaanan te ud-day panchhi
Dekh te sahi ki karday neen
Na o karday rizq zakheera
Na o bhukkay marday neen
Kadi kissi ne pankh pakhero
Bhukkay marday dekhay neen?
Banda ee karda ai rizq zakheera
Banday ee bhukkay marday neen.

[See, O Humans]

[The birds flying high in the skies
Just see what they do
Neither do they hoard their food
Nor do they starving die
Has anyone ever seen
Birds dying of hunger?
It's humans who hoard
And humans who of hunger die.]

Perhaps Mullah JJ can be provided some music of the same in his padded cell.

Like all the other shows, I missed out on this one too. After all, who in his right mind would want to watch Aalim online? But I have been reading about this episode a lot. Its all over the place (only second to meera).
But I dont understand why people have to criticize him for being rich or owning an expensive clothing label. I dont see anything wrong there. I mean, he didn't have to castigate poor people the way he did (although I too have issues with the begging kind) but his wealth and sources of income are quite impertinent to the issue at hand.

@Serial Kicker: If you read it again you would see that the criticism is not directed at JJ for being rich (although using supposed piety to make a few bucks as in the case of Lays chips is a problem in my book) but against his lecturing the poor to stop complaining about their situation, an arrogance that is ONLY born out of being rich. Insofar as that is concerned, this desire to preserve the status quo can only come from the privileged, not from anyone who has nothing to lose.

@Anon801: I can only take that as a compliment since you have singularly refused to cite even one example of where any of what I wrote is made up. But obv I cannot (nor would I ever want to) match the real bullshit of either Mullah JJ or Aamir Liaquat... you're not one of them, are you? If you are, Eid Mubarak to you!

JJ has no right to comment on pity situation of poor and starving people as he is not doing any thing to improve their situation. Mere lecturing (tableegh) and making money out of endorsing a conspicuous food product as Halal is no way a real Islam.

Absolutely love your posts. I have had this inkling for some time now, that shows like Aalim online are used to expose the reality of these Maulana's, Mufti's and all those who beleive on occupying a holier than though realm. Don't know why people can't see the BS that is thrown at us.
How long can you see Aalim online without loosing it. (My threshold is five minutes only)

Pyala people,

Thanks a lot for the shout out ...

by the way, I couldn't watch the whole clip so totally missed out about the farishta setting the market rates ... His theories totally denies the existence of human agency, human resources and upward social mobility through hard work and education ... who is he? A 21st century tableeghi pope?

Back in the late eighteenth century, the English writer William Cobbett commented on the religious tracts then being distributed to the ever-growing numbers of the poor was "Starve without making a noise." This man's message is the same, two and a half centuries later. Religion makes me sick. Yes, all religion.

I used to listen to his music. I still have a few of his songs on my ipod. But in the recent years, each time I came across his media appearance, he has made me sick. I request him and others to study Islam with an open mind. Instead of concentrating on the good things, also have a look at horrible and senseless koranic verses and hadiths, Then decide if this religion makes any sense.

Forgive my ignorance, but does Bulleh Shah enforce what JJ is saying? Is it that one should not really be worried about one's financial condition?

XYZ said...

@Anon1224: No, my friend, Bulleh Shah is saying the exact opposite of what JJ claims, pointing out that it is human agency (the actions of hoarders) that causes starvation. By the way, Prof Amartya Sen's work on the Bengal famine of the 1943 (which killed some 3 million people from starvation and malnourishment) also shows that it was not the shortage of food that caused the famine - there was actually plenty of rice available - but (in the case of Bengal) the bureaucratic system which created bottlenecks in distribution, the hoarding of food by the British colonial powers towards the war effort, and speculative inflation which made millions of people suddenly too poor to afford to buy food.

Salam all,

I think people criticizing JJ are to be blamed

People have now evolved such a mindset that if a person has beard and/or follows some what Sunnah in his life then they cast him as near to Jibraail (Gabriel)

Every single action of his/her is monitored and fatwas are issued relentlessly

I think one must have some common sense of judging a person not on his looks or personality but his experience

For example we judge a doctor by his learning, practice and experience

Then why don't we judge some individual when it comes to the religion

HI CafePyala XYZ,
I've just discovered your incredible, awesome, mind-blowing blog and now going through some of the topics. I got so angry when I read and listened to this bearded moron Junaid Jamshed along with the jahil host of Jahil online.

Seriously, both of them should stay with a poor family for a week and experience on their own accounts what it means to be without electricity, atta and all the basic every-day life things that are essential to make a family able to look out for itself. The nearest thing to distress these two have mostly encountered is propably a couple of minutes without bijli in their posh neighbourhoods or when their favorite supermarkets have run out of cadbury chocolate.

I'm angered by the amount of hypocrisy, ignorance, lack of humanity and empathy/sympathy these tele-evangelists as well as the bearded/non-bearded elite show towards people that are poor. I'm angered by the fact how they use Islamic scholars (that are actually in direct opposition to their way of thinking) to justify their disgusting cause, they've haven't even read a single word of theirs! for instance Ali Shariati was a champion for the rights of the poor, he looked at how poverty was used as a mechanism by the political and religious leaders in order to opress people and ensure stagnation and hereby their own privileges. He stressed on numerous times that Islam pays attention to the bread "an empty stomach lacks everything, a society that has economic problems also lacks spiritual wealth" (from where shall we begin)

JJ and his bearded, dangerous friends should feel ashamed of how they mock other peoples situation and they should experience on their own bodies what it means when you are actually poor. They're exactly like how the Christian Church was during the dark medival era in Europe - casting more and more darkness on peoples minds while their bellies (and bank accounts) are growing bigger and bigger. Utterly disgusting!

because of ur stupid post, shameless non-muslims started agreeing with the post. what is the difference left between the muslims and the non muslims then. as for junaid jamshed and what he said, i totally agree with what he said is correct. if u dont know then i should tell u that he has lived a life as a poor man soon after he gave up singing, he gave up all his money. he did not even have money to buy food. so he sure does know how to be patient when u r poor and all others should start learning that.
actually the problem is that we dont look at ourselves but we always want to pass bad comments about others. its high time we should start worrying about how we follow our religion.
everything junaid says is noted by the ulemas, and if he says anything wrong then he is scolded for it (i thank Allah that only sensible ppl get the right to talk to him about these matters and no u senseless ppl).
And for ur kind information Mullah means "Maula wala".
i agree he is a Maula wala, may Allah give him all the happiness in this world and the hereafter.
learn to critisize urself u liberal ppl.

a very good job but it could have been even better. a few suggestions:
1. please avoid strong language
2. don't says things like 'dr.evil' etc because it is already obvious by the words of these people that they are ignorant and fake.
a good job

The perception taken here and the meanings interpreted in between the lines by Junaid Jamshed is totally a judgemental content. We should analyse any persons' statement in nuetral way puting aside our biases and dislikes. Since he has been changed And i must say a positive one he has been vehmently criticized by our so called enlightened strata as distant spectators without knowing about him and his life. He owns a POSH Branded chain of textiles, but why is he criticized for it Amir Adnan, Ammar Belal, Hassan Shehryaar Yasin, Sanas and Safinas, Gul AHmed, AL Karam are quite a few to name that are even selling the textile stuff at compratively higher costs then JJ (I have comparisons with me). Neither he said that Poors need only to focus on faith nor he quoted that rich people need not to be good Muslims. His point which was quite valid and if seen out of the judgemental thinking is very very true. Is not as a nation we have become beggars? The good things he told are either overlooked or delibrately omit by the writer, he told very affirmative indicators related to pakistan in which he told that we stand at 2nd number in donating for others, maximum number of masjids are in Pakistan, Maximum Hafiz e Quran are in our land, larger number of people collectively pray at one time in our country than any other country and the list was so on too.... The thing is that we need to understand that in which context the talks are proceeded by any person in talk shows. We belive our politians, we believe on doctors prescribing some new technique of treatment, we believe our media persons that they are reporting obejectively, then why we always criticize our religious scholars and the people who try to follow religion and want others sincerely to follow the right path. We must respect our religious scholars and we must also appreciate the change of juanid Jamshed, who left everything at his peak time just for the sake of Allah. Most of our educated segment calls him MULLAH or MOLANA which I must mention is a very respected term and is only designated for the people who get education in Islamic studies properly. JJ is not among those he is just a common man trying to abide by the Sharia and sunnats which deplorably we donot apply in our lives and thus we found his talks, beliefs and appearance as something ALIEN. IF you as enl;ightened class say LIVE AND LET LIVE so why dont you people spare him to live? He is not asking you to purchanse from his shop. Moreover he is very much indulged in charity activities at INTERNATIONAL LEVEL where most of our celebraties even dont think to reach out. Go and check in UK, SOuth AFrica, Canada and some more countries and check his charity projects he is mostly a MUST name in charity shows and represent Pakistan in international Nasheed concerts. He is even working for the flood victims very actively and he is not only blamimg poors for the devastation. Was our prophet ElITIST? he mostly talks with reference to Quran and hadiths. He can be wrong sometimes as he is human and we all should give him margin of being human.. I eprsonally think that LAYS ad was a bad gesture from him but To err is human are we all perfect. Look intop urself and accountability must start from ownself. What do you think??!!!

well i see your emotional dirty mind, when you called JJ an "Arrogant 'wanker'".... Btw, if you really want to know, that if he has ever spend time with a poor family, try visiting the Raiwind Ijtema, or see how he lives when he is with ja'mat(on tableeghi tour) and lives in villages for months in villages mosques(try spending one night there yourself with other villagers) for the tableegh. You may find a lot what you dont know about the 'poor' and this ' over-priced clothes' wearing person. 'May You find the righteous path'.
