DawnNews' Urdu Avatar

DawnNews' new look.

It seems we were slightly off in terms of our time slot predictions for the Urdu bulletins. The date for their launch has also been put back by a week. The one major addition here, as you may notice, is that of BBC Urdu man Wusatullah Khan (on the extreme right). Could he be the silver bullet that can save the channel?

Sadly a wannabe channel will always be a wanna-be - its going to take some deep rooted buckle down effort to pull back a reputation - the cut throat competition will eat anyone alive - and if Dawn's treasure chest is already dry then .... its gonne be a tough cookie to crack

Good Luck to Dawn. I don't think they need a silver bullet, but if they do well, that would be the best news for the most measured and maturely toned news channel in Pakistan.

Wusatullah Khan's columns (blogs) on BBC Urdu are pretty good.
I wonder if he can get his vociferous anti-establishment views on an Urdu channel (which Dawn is going to be).

Since a broadcaster's popularity is a function of how much he trashes (correctly or incorrectly) the government and not the establishment, he really has a tall order on his hands.

Oh no! Are our favourite food programmes going to stop telling us how to whip up that quick duck and veal pate with herbs provencale for that impromptu cocktail party that you occasionally feel like throwing and start teaching us the joys of making aaloo gosht?

I think its great to see DawnNews introducing an Urdu time-band. Now, both audiences – the Urdu & English speaking will be able to receive and appreciate credible and reliable news. I believe this will cater to the vacuum of reliable Urdu news channels in Paksitan. Another smart move on their part was introducing Wasutullah Khan from BBC Radio Urdu Services in their Urdu transmission. He has a very strong journalistic background and following, this coupled with his wit and charm should produce a strong product.
