Gone With the Wind?

On the occasion of international women's day, thought I'd share with all of you some vintage Western (I believe they are all American) ads I came across. You know, just to remind ourselves where the current non-dialectical lecturers on women's rights are coming from.

And these are a few more current ads:

Hmmmm. Perhaps things have not changed all that much there either.

The Nipple Bra? What was the inventor thinking?

the first five paragraphs of the following news story are a gem of penmanship on the occasion of international women's day :)

Good job reminding every body that the dear old west, is only fifty years removed from letting them work en masse in the workforce and only ninety years removed from granting women the right to vote.

I would like to know what Cafe Pyala's opinion is on a piece that has to appear in the mainstream press but hasn't. I am of course referring to the strike at the Karachi Pearl Continental.

Cafe Pyala's comment on the nature of the strike's coverage would be appreciated.

The ad with the little girl is just plain wrong. Two words that can never go together: prepubescent and sexy.

I thought the DJ flooring ad was pretty ingenious. I'd love to see a subversive ad in a Pakistani newspaper, sadly most ad execs and copywriters in Pakistan are rather humourless - not to mention arrogant twats.

@WyseGuy: I think Daroon e Khana has now posted something on the PC protest. We've been late on this admittedly but only out of non-blog workloads. I think DeK had been planning on doing something for a week now.

@AKS: Agreed on both counts. But it's interesting to see how certain images can no longer be employed (the prepubescent / sexy for one, and I have some great ones linking babies with cigarettes and cola), yet others can continue to be used at least until some social outrage makes them unacceptable as well.

And yes, knowing many of the advertising execs in Pakistan, I can absolutely confirm that, despite their constant posing, "creative" is not a word I would generally associate with them.

@ XYZ: All good. Thanks Cafe Pyaala.
